Robot Johnson Looks to Laugh in Record Time in May
CHARLOTTE – The Robot Johnson Show (www.robotjohnson.com), Charlotte’s premier sketch comedy troupe, will perform its May show at Carolina Actors Studio Theatre (CAST) with a slightly different twist. Every sketch will be three minutes long at most. The MTA- and BoB-award-winning comedy troupe, which will perform at the Cape Fear Comedy Festival May 27th, will next perform at CAST on Saturday, May 22 at 11:00 pm.

“We’re really excited about this concept, because it forces us to think about comedy at a different pace,” explains founder and head writer Sean Keenan. “As opposed to a typical 12- to 15-sketch night, this show will feature around thirty sketches.”

Tickets are $15 and are available here. For more details, please visit www.robotjohnson.com and www.nccast.com.

Robot Johnson’s Golden to Open Valentease
CHARLOTTE – David Golden, a founding member of The Robot Johnson Show (www.robotjohnson.com), Charlotte’s premier sketch comedy troupe, is wise in the ways of love. He has loved so many women, he claims, that “the word love has lost its meaning. As has the word women. As has the word meaning.” It is this wisdom that he will bring to the stage when he takes the first opening slot at Valentease, Big Mamma’s House of Burlesque’s first show of 2010, February 6th at the Visulite Theatre.

This is not the first time Golden has performed with the Queen City’s queens of the striptease. Robot Johnson teamed with Big Mamma’s House of Burlesque on the 2009 Merry Stripmas show, also at the Visulite. Meghan Lowther, another founding member of Robot Johnson, will team up with Golden for some very special duets. Also opening for Valentease will be magician Hannibal. Comedian and performance artist Johnny Millwater will perform interstitial segments during the show.

“I’m excited to work with these ladies again,” says Golden. “Burlesque and comedy have a great deal in common: timing, attitude, irony, pasties. It’s going to be a fun show!”

The Robot Johnson Show is coming off a stellar five-month run to end 2009. The troupe headlined at Carolina Actors Studio Theatre and The Gathering Spot in Greenville, SC, were featured performers at Area 15’s Barcamp Charlotte coffeeshop, and opened for Big Mamma D’s House of Burlesque at the Visulite Theatre. Robot Johnson has been selected to participate in the 2010 NC Comedy Arts Festival in Carrboro, NC; they will open the Sketch Comedy weekend on February 4th at 10 pm.

David Golden is a founding member of The Robot Johnson Show and serves as a writer and performer with the group. He was the keynote comedian at UW Oshkosh’s 2009 Provost’s Teaching and Learning Summit and is a frequent comedy workshop guest instructor for the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Golden has been interviewed about sketch comedy and the state of comedy in Charlotte by Creative Loafing, WBT 1110 AM and WBTV. His song “Halloween Night” was turned into a Halloween e-card and is now a viral video at Robot Johnson’s Youtube channel. His album, Here’s What I Really Think of You, was released in 2009 and is available at http://davidgolden.bandcamp.com/.

Robot Johnson to Take NCCAF by Storm

CHARLOTTE – The Robot Johnson Show (www.robotjohnson.com), Charlotte’s premier sketch comedy troupe, is starting 2010 off right: with a prime slot on the opening night of the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival (NCCAF) in Carrboro, NC. The MTA-winning band of performers will take a half-hour of their best material to NCCAF with them. Robot Johnson goes on stage at 8:30 pm along with Toronto’s Annabelle Goes It Alone… and Greensboro’s Mon Frère.

“All of our training has brought us to this point, this final confrontation between good and evil,” explains writer/performer and RoJo blogmaster Graham Odom. “Also, free beer for performers. So it’s a win-win.”

The NC Comedy Arts Festival is the largest comedy festival in the Southern U.S. featuring improv and standup comedy. NCCAF premieres two new components in 2010: Sketch Comedy and Film & Video. The sketch comedy portion of the festival will take place at the DSI Comedy Theatre, located on 200 N. Greensboro Street in Carrboro, February 4-6, with stand-up, improv and film/video the following three weekends. NCCAF could not immediately be reached for comment regarding free beer for performers, however. For more information, please visit www.nccomedyarts.com.

Robot Johnson is Thankful, Willing to Prove it with November CAST Show

CHARLOTTE –  The Robot Johnson Show (www.robotjohnson.com), Charlotte’s premier sketch comedy troupe, is thankful for its bounty at the end of a tumultuous year.  Just three months ago, the group had lost its performance space and was unsure about its future.  Today, ongoing relationships with the Carolina Actors Studio Theatre (CAST) and other venues in the Carolinas – coupled with the first Metrolina Theatre Award ever given to a comedy troupe – have given Robot Johnson a foothold in the Queen City and a legitimacy in the market that many performers
